Rock Climbing Project Design
Rock climbing based equipment project in collaboration with Ben Carter @bin__cart and myself, @mattlorcandavies. This was our brief:
After witnessing the ever-growing rise of the climbing community across the UK, Matt and Ben have joined forces to create the elite outfit for the new age climber. Combining carefully selected fabrics and smooth design techniques, the Scrambler outfit has emerged.
The 4-part outfit includes a super-lightweight jacket with specifically placed hidden pockets, a moisture-resistant jersey, and a pair of shorts with an integrated removable chalk bag. The use of a removable chalk bag allows the climber to adapt its positioning to suit the desired route without restricting the wearer’s actions.
We invite you to browse our collection and our prior work through our portfolio websites and Instagrams, showcasing our design specifications and future colour ways, alongside 3D renders.
Fourth Portal Maritime Collection
I designed these tech packs to align with my event, 'Textiles, Garb, and the Thames.' The concept aimed to integrate maritime clothing, fabric technology, innovation, and draw inspiration from my local town, Gravesend.
This collection served as a test of my knowledge accumulated over the years, stemming from internships at Vollebak and Purple Mountain Observatory, as well as my university education focusing on sportswear design. I amalgamated these skills and ideas, showcasing the collection for a two-month exhibition at the Fourth Portal space in Gravesend.
Canterbury Industry Project
Canterbury Rugby reached out to our university course and discussed an industry project with them about regenerating interest in rugby, but also ways and ideas of seeing how rugby could become a trendy sport amongst GEN-Z .
The project detailed making fanwear for stadium goers, the idea was to design a small collection based around what the spectators would wear in the stadium in the peak of game season which would be in the winter months.
The clothing had to be practical and functional, comfortable, showing representation, environmentally viable and most important, stylish and trendy for the GEN-Z target audience.
Fourth Portal Event Night
A 10-day journey into the clothing of those working on the Thames explored through textiles, poetry, song, storytelling and workshops. From the Watermen to future Gravesend Riverside workers.
The purpose of Textiles, Garb, and the Thames was to explore and document the history of textiles and clothing along the Thames. The opening day showcased poetry performances by several individuals, all incorporating works by Henry T. Bradford. Bradford, a local resident with experience working on various docks and tugs along the Thames, contributed significantly to the event.
Purple Mountain Observatory CLO Experimentation
The aim of this project was to look into different colourway options for the future of the products, from this we uploaded the renders to the Instagram to see what the fanbase would like to see colour wise.
Using CLO was also another method of testing the stress and strain maps of the garments, this virtual environment would tell you what potential issue would arise in areas of the garment, this was an interesting deep dive as I not only improved my design and pattern working skills, but also the knowledge of QC in garments.
Creative Inspirations & Process:
My creative process follows a straightforward path. It begins with a thorough examination of the brief, treating it as my guidebook throughout the project's duration. I analyse how every aspect can be addressed or solved.
The next step involves mood boarding, where I gather images related to the brief and other random visuals that catch my eye. These diverse images serve as a wellspring of inspiration, helping me abstract ideas.
With a wealth of initial thoughts collected through mood boarding, I transition to the sketch stage. Here, I visualize numerous solutions and transfer them onto the sketch page.
After refining and selecting the most promising concepts from the sketches, I move on to the full design phase. This stage involves continuous iterations until the final design takes shape.
