:Brief
Arts United Football Club (AUFC) is a University of the Arts London (UAL) staff football team, comprising staff from various roles, ranging from lecturers to administrative staff. It prides itself on being all-inclusive, aiming for enjoyment on the pitch and fostering social connections among UAL staff and those from other universities. It serves as a means for staff to step away from work and engage in a friendly football game.
The team characterises itself as highly optimistic, embracing a democratic and camaraderie-focused community. Due to its inclusive nature, the staff age range varies, and the team members come from diverse walks of life. AUFC has expressed interest in having a custom-designed football kit and logo. Currently, the team uses blank Nike long-sleeve jerseys, which pose numerous issues, from overheating to not capturing the essence of the team's spirit and mottos.
The designs for the new kit must reflect the team’s energy and spirit while incorporating updated performance fabrics to enhance the team’s play execution.
RESEARCH PAGES: The research primarily delved into investigating the team's playing venue and transportation logistics. The team expressed a desire for a vibrant jersey during matches, transitioning to more understated clothing off the pitch. Despite this shift, the sideline kit needed to maintain some visual cohesion with the on-field attire. Consequently, this called for the creation of a collection that seamlessly blended both aspects, avoiding a clear separation between a bright match kit and darker commuting clothing.
Exploring the area proved to be fascinating, as I extensively created mood boards focused on the geography of London and the specific locations housing most football pitches. The culmination of this exploration led me to interweave brutalism into the kit designs, resulting in patterns that echoed the distinctive architectural style. The artistic inspiration primarily drew from Peter Saville, aligning with the team's musical preferences, particularly their admiration for bands like New Order. It's worth noting that Peter Saville was the mastermind behind the album designs for iconic bands such as New Order and Joy Division.
The logo drew direct inspiration from Peter Saville's work on the New Order Total album. To achieve this, I deconstructed the album cover, breaking it down into individual shapes, and then reconstructed it in a distinct style, infusing a unique and personalized touch.
